KKR beat MI to qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs

Kolkata Knight Riders become the first team to reach IPL 2024 playoffs. KKR came on top of a rain-disrupted T16 match. They beat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs at Eden Gardens to secure a birth in the playoffs. Mumbai Indians are already eliminated from the playoffs.

The match was delayed as it was raining in Kolkata. After the rains, the match started with only 16 overs per inning. KKR batted first but got in trouble as their openers and captain Shreyas Iyer were dismissed very early. After this early debacle, Venkatesh Iyer started batting fiercely and scored 42 runs off just 21 balls. Then Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, and Rinku Singh contributed to reach a competitive score of 157 runs in 16 overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla got 2 wickets each for Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai Indians started their chase well. Their openers posted a partnership of 65 runs. Ishan Kishan played explosively and scored 40 runs off 22 balls. But KKR gained momentum when Sunil Narine got Ishan Kishan dismissed. Varun Chakaravarthy got the wicket of Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav and Tim David could not finish the chase and got out cheaply by Andre Russell. Harshit Rana picked up vital wickets of Naman Dhir and Tilak Verma. Mumbai Indians could reach the score of 139 runs only and KKR won this match by 18 runs. Varun Chakarvarthy got the Player of the Match award.
